Global industrial energy consumption continues to rise, with electricity costs increasing by an average of 15% across major economies in 2025, according to data from the International Energy Agency. This trend is driving a significant increase in the adoption of variable frequency drives (VFDs), also known as frequency inverters, which can reduce energy consumption in motor-driven systems by 20% to 50%.
Electric motors account for approximately 45% of global electricity consumption, with pumps, fans, and compressors being the largest energy consumers in industrial facilities. By adjusting the motor speed to match the actual load requirements, VFDs eliminate the energy waste associated with traditional throttling methods.
'Energy efficiency has become a top priority for industrial companies, not only to reduce operational costs but also to meet sustainability targets and regulatory requirements,' said James Chen, head of industrial energy efficiency at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). 'Frequency inverters are one of the most cost-effective and proven technologies for achieving significant energy savings in industrial processes.'
The report from UNIDO indicates that the industrial sector could save over 1,300 TWh of electricity annually by 2030 through widespread adoption of VFD technology, equivalent to the total electricity consumption of Germany. This would result in a reduction of approximately 900 million tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
In addition to energy savings, VFDs offer other benefits such as improved process control, reduced mechanical stress on equipment, and extended motor lifespan, making them a valuable investment for industrial operations of all sizes.
